General Surgery: An Introduction

This introductory teaching session gives a structured overview of general surgery aimed at early-stage surgical learners and junior doctors. The lecture focuses on how to approach common abdominal presentations in everyday clinical practice, with an emphasis on practical decision-making that helps on the ward, in the emergency setting, and during surgical assessment.

The session walks through abdominal pain by region, common differentials, key signs and symptoms, and the basic investigations used to narrow the diagnosis. It also covers abdominal distension, hernias, abdominal examination, and common surgical scars that trainees are likely to encounter in general surgical jobs.

Particular attention is given to common acute pathologies such as appendicitis, gallstone-related disease, diverticular disease, and bowel obstruction. The speaker also discusses core management principles including A–E assessment, resuscitation, analgesia, blood tests, imaging choices such as ultrasound, X-ray, and CT, and when escalation is needed. This is a useful overview for students and junior trainees building confidence in the initial assessment of surgical patients.
